About Lua
She / Her
From support and ops at Google to UX on Maps, and eventually into design systems at scale-ups, I’ve worn a few hats over the last 15+ years, working and collaborating across multiple countries and disciplines.
Before I became a designer
2008-15
Dublin, IE · London, UK · Sydney, AU
After finishing my computer engineering degree, I left Spain and started my career in customer support and product ops at DoubleClick/Google. It was there I saw firsthand how complexity hurts both businesses and users. I learned how to communicate clearly, align teams, scale operations, and launch products smoothly across time zones. More than anything, I learned the importance of building things that are actually useful, for both people and teams.
Serving millions through UX at Google Maps
2016-22
Sydney, AU
While at Google, I went back to study part-time and transitioned into UX on the Google Maps team. It was a humbling and formative time to start my design career, working on features used by hundreds of millions of people every day. I led UX from strategy to launch, aligned frameworks across distributed teams & products, internationalized services, and helped scale thoughtful design across global markets.
Designing Systems
2022-Present
Zaragoza, ES · Sydney, AU
All these experiences naturally led me to design systems, where design, structure, usability, ops, and scale come together. I love creating systems that empower both teams and products, and I’ve found that through the shared language of a well-crafted, open design system, you can help build the kind of culture where people thrive and do their best work.
Outside of work
On-going
Sydney, AU
Based in Sydney, as a mum of one, I find balance in my weekly yoga class, riding my e-bike through the hills of this beautiful city, and playing Lego.
Lots. Of. Lego.
